Functional Medicine in East Amherst is a new, cutting-edge clinical model for assessment, treatment, and prevention of chronic disease.  Functional Medicine incorporates the most current research in genetic science, physiology, and understanding of how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the underlying cause of a disease.  Ultimately, Functional Medicine is a personalized, patient-centered model that empowers the patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health by working in collaboration to address the underlying causes of disease.

Principles Of Functional Medicine

Core principles of Functional Medicine:

  1. Understanding of the physiological individuality of each patient, based on genetic and environmental factors
  2. Using evidence-based treatment guidelines to support a patient-centered, rather than a disease-centered, approach to treatment
  3. Review of internal physiological and biomechanical factors
  4. Restoration of health, not just the absence of disease
  5. Promotion of proper organ function to enhance the health and life span of each patient

How Is Functional Medicine Different?

  • At every appointment and/or consultation you will meet with the doctor, not an assistant.  Each appointment is 30-60 minutes, ensuring that all information is explained and all questions are answered.  Patient-education is an essential part of each appointment.
  • Functional Medicine does not treat the disease but rather aims to restore the body's ability to function optimally through the correction of biomechanical, physiological, and musculoskeletal imbalances.
  • Functional Medicine has been shown to help those suffering from the following diseases: Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, Digestive Disorders (IBD, IBS, GERD, Reflux), Elevated Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Cardiovascular Disorders, Environmental Allergies, Food Allergies, Fatigue Syndromes, PMS, Menopause, PCOS, Fibromyalgia, Inflammatory Disorders, Metabolic Syndrome,Thyroid DisordersFunctional Medicine And Conventional Medicine
One of the primary goals of Functional Medicine is to work with your primary care physician and/or current health care team. Functional Medicine practitioners work with you closely as consultants in preventative, nutritional, and supplemental care, while also corresponding with your healthcare team

What To Expect During A Functional Medicine Consultation

    • Your initial consultation will include a detailed medical history, including a physical, orthopedic and neurological evaluation, if needed.
    • Dr. Morreale and Dr. Michalski will then obtain all necessary medical records. Upon obtaining the necessary information, they will review the information in order to create a treatment plan unique to the individual.
    • After the initial exam, appropriate lab assessments and referrals will be prescribed.
    • Treatment plans typically include lifestyle modification, exercise, nutritional counseling, stress reduction, and dietary supplementation.
    • The goal of functional medicine is to treat the cause of the disease not just the presenting symptoms. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to ensure treatment plan effectiveness.
